This wholly aromatic polyamide is distinguished by rigid, rod-like molecular chains formed through para-oriented benzene rings and intense intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Commercially embodied in products such as DuPont’s Kevlar® and Teijin’s Twaron®, these fibers bridge the mechanical performance gap between conventional synthetic fibers (polyester/nylon) and high-tensile steel wire. Their unique paracrystalline structure, with molecular chains aligned parallel to the filament axis, delivers a specific strength-to-weight ratio approximately five times that of steel, an elevated elastic modulus, and thermal stability with decomposition occurring only above 427–500 °C. Unlike aliphatic polyamides, the rigid molecular backbone of para-aramid prevents chain folding, ensuring minimal creep and exceptional dimensional stability under sustained cyclic mechanical stress.
The production of these fibers follows a precisely controlled three-stage sequence: polymerization of p-phenylenediamine and terephthaloyl chloride to yield a high-molecular-weight polymer powder; dissolution in concentrated sulfuric acid to form a liquid crystalline anisotropic spinning dope; and extrusion via dry-jet wet spinning (air-gap). During extrusion, the dope is forced through spinnerets into an air gap before coagulation, allowing for full molecular orientation under shear without subsequent mechanical drawing. The resulting continuous filaments, typically 12 micrometers in diameter, undergo neutralization and heat treatment to achieve 100 percent paracrystalline order. Because the chemically inert surface of aramid possesses low surface energy, the fiber is inherently resistant to bonding with elastomeric compounds. To ensure interfacial integrity, the yarn must undergo a dual-stage Resorcinol-Formaldehyde-Latex (RFL) dipping treatment or a sub-coating of isocyanates and epoxy resins, creating a molecular bridge that prevents delamination of the carcass under high-frequency flexing.
In industrial and automotive applications, aramid serves as the primary tension member in systems requiring high torque transfer and compact geometry. In automotive timing and serpentine belts, aramid cords maintain precise pitch stability and prevent tooth jump in high-RPM engines, effectively absorbing shock loads across a temperature gradient of -40 °C to 150 °C. In heavy-duty mining conveyor systems, aramid enables single-ply carcass constructions with warp strengths ranging from 800 to 4000 N/mm. These constructions are up to 43 percent lighter than equivalent polyester-nylon (EP) belts and 52 percent lighter than steel-cord alternatives.
